He demonstrated a precocious talent for mathematics from a young age. Birkhoff earned his bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1905 and his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Chicago in 1907.
Academic Career
After graduating, Birkhoff began his academic career as an instructor at Harvard University.
In 1912, he moved to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he remained until his retirement in 1942. Birkhoff served as President of the American Mathematical Society from 1925-1926.
